Final Cut Pro X: Refining the Edit

Helpful Keyboard Commands for working in the Storyline.

Getting Ready

    • Right-click on Event and choose New Project (call it Practice)
    • Click on Favorites Smart Collection to show all Favorites in Library
    • Command-click on 5 clips at random
    • Choose Video Only (Shift-2; remember to turn it back later)
    • Type "E" to edit to storyline

  1. Getting More Screen Space
    • Command-Control-1 = Hide/Show Browser [Window > Show/Hide Browser]
    • Command-4= Hide/Show Inspector [Window > Show/Hide Inspector]
    • Command-5= Hide/Show Inspector [Window > Media Browser > Show/Hide Effects]
  2. Working Conditions
    • S=Video Skimmer on/off
    • Shift-S= Audio Skimmer on/off
    • N = Snapping [toggle on/off)
    • V=enable/disable selected clip [Clip > Disable/Enable]
    • Up Arrow = Previous Edit
    • Down Arrow = Next Edit
    • Left Arrow = Back 1 Frame
    • Right Arrow = Forward 1 Frame
    • X = Select entire clip with In and Out Points [Mark > Set Clip Range]
    • Option-X = Remove Selection(s) [Mark > Clear Selected Ranges]
    • Command-L=Loop/Don't Loop [View > Playback > Loop Playback]
  3. Modifying Clips and Edits
    • Option - [ = Trim Start (move clip In Point to skimmer or playhead) [Trim > Trim Start]
    • Option - ] = Trim End (move clip Out Point to skimmer or playhead) [Trim > Trim End]
    • , [comma] = Move selected item point 1 frame to the left [Trim > Nudge Left]
    • . [period] = Move selected item point 1 frame to the right [Trim > Nudge Right]
    • /= Play selection[View > Playback > Play Selection]
    • Shift-/=Play Around skimmer or playhead [View > Playback > Play Around]
    • T= Trim Tool which can do 3 types of Edits
      • Ripple—Drag an edit point to make a clip longer or shorter. Changes the length of the overall Storyline
      • Roll—Drag two edit points to make one clip longer and the other shorter. Does NOT changes the length of the overall Storyline
      • Slip—Clip length stays the same; content [which frames are shown] changes


    Motion: The Lower Thirds Project

    • Getting Ready
      • Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard > Use All Function Keys... (or, if you don't want this off, hold down the FN key whenever using a function key)
      • Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Show Spotlight Search off
    • Creating a Lower Third Title 
      • New Title Project (5 seconds)
      • File > Save
      • Show Title/Action Safe
      • Format text: 
        • Korataki 48 Regular
        • Add sub-line to text and format (Korataki 36 extra light)
      • Create rectangle behind text, in its own Group labelled Rectangle
      • Add Drop Zone above text in its own Group labelled Logo
        • Resize to 25%
        • place in location of choice
    • Animate the Elements
        • Rectangle In: Ramp Position X [change Start value -2000]/End Value 0]
        • Rectangle Out: Ramp Scale X [end value the negative amount of X Scale; e.g. if scale is 230, then -230]
        • Text: Dolly In/Dolly Out [Sequence Text > Energetic]
        • Logo In: Motion Path from offscreen; reposition below frame; change parameters [Reverse; Ease Both]
        • Logo Out: Duplicate Motion Path (Command-D) to move offscreen [Forward; Ease Both; drag to end point of timeline]
        • Build In/Out Markers
    • Publish
        • Drop Zone (should be automatic)
        • Build In/Out (should be automatic)
        • Rectangle: Color, Opacity
        • Text: Alignment, Color
        • Logo: Scale [in Image]; X Position, Opacity [in Properties]


    If all else fails, you can download a finished version here. There's a "Read Me" file inside that tells you where to put the folder so it will be available in FCP X.
